Zaleplon (Sonata)

What the word means

Zaleplon is the drug. Sonata is the brand.

It’s the shortest-acting of the Z-drugs, with a very brief half-life. That single property defines it. It’s built for the problem of not being able to fall asleep, and because it clears so quickly, it tends to leave less of a hangover the next morning than its longer-acting relatives.

The flip side is that it does less for staying asleep, since it’s mostly gone by the middle of the night. It’s a controlled substance and it’s meant for short-term use.
