Hydroxyzine (Vistaril)

What the word means

Hydroxyzine is the drug. Vistaril and Atarax are brand names.

It’s an antihistamine, the same broad family as allergy medicines, and it’s used for anxiety because it’s sedating. That’s the honest mechanism. It’s often prescribed as needed in place of a benzodiazepine, and the reason is straightforward: it works reasonably quickly, and it carries no risk of physical dependence and no controlled substance paperwork.

The trade-off is drowsiness, and it’s anticholinergic, which means dry mouth and fog are common. It’s a genuinely useful option, and it isn’t a magic replacement for a benzodiazepine either.
